Signs Your Home May Need Repiping

Some plumbing problems point to a single failed fitting or section of pipe. Others signal that the supply system as a whole has reached the end of its service life. These four patterns are worth taking seriously:

• Multiple pinhole leaks: A single pinhole can be patched. When leaks appear in several locations along copper pipe over a short period, the pipe material itself has deteriorated and patching is no longer a practical solution.
• Discolored water: Brown, yellow, or rust-tinted water after a period of low use points to corrosion inside the supply lines. The pipe is shedding material into the water stream.
• Low pressure throughout the house: Pressure loss at every fixture, rather than a single faucet, is often caused by mineral and scale buildup narrowing the inside of aging galvanized pipe.
• Original galvanized or polybutylene pipe: Galvanized steel corrodes predictably with age. Polybutylene (typically gray plastic, installed widely from the 1970s through the mid-1990s) has documented failure patterns. Homes with either material should be evaluated regardless of whether visible problems have appeared.

Copper, PEX, & CPVC: Understanding Your Options

Modern repiping projects use one of three primary pipe materials. Each carries tradeoffs worth understanding before choosing:

• Copper has been a standard residential supply pipe material for decades. It’s installed with soldered or pressed fittings and is well understood by licensed plumbers.
• PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) is flexible and freeze-resistant, and its installation is generally faster than copper in retrofit situations. It’s become a common choice for whole-home repiping because it routes through existing spaces more easily.
• CPVC (chlorinated polyvinyl chloride) is a rigid plastic pipe rated for both hot and cold supply lines. Its material cost is lower than copper, and it’s been used in residential construction for several decades.

What the Repiping Process Involves

The project scope depends on the home’s layout and how the original plumbing was routed. Other Plumbing Items to Evaluate at the Same Time

A repiping project is a natural moment to look at the rest of the plumbing system. Interior supply lines are only part of the picture in an older home.

• Main water line: The line bringing water into the home from the street is separate from the interior supply lines replaced during repiping, but it ages on a similar timeline. If it hasn’t been evaluated recently, a repiping project is a good time to assess it.
• Drain and sewer lines: Interior drain lines and sewer laterals aren’t part of a standard repiping project, but an older home may need them evaluated separately. Knowing their condition avoids surprises after the supply work is complete.

• Water heater: Fresh supply plumbing connects most cleanly to new equipment. A water heater nearing the end of its typical 10-year service life is worth evaluating alongside a repiping project rather than after.
